OFFICE OF THE AGRONOMIST TAWANG

INTRODUCTION

The Regional Foundation Seed Potato Farm came into being in Tawang during the year 1977-78. The project had been initially funded by the North Eastern Council with its first phase starting from the year 1977-78 to 1982-83 which was further allowed to continue for another three year i.e upto 1985-86. The farm was taken over by the department of Agriculture, Arunachal Pradesh in the year 1986-87. The site of the farm was selected by a team of experts from the Central Potato Research Station. Shillong, I.C.A.R. Shillong, NEC, Shillong department of Agriculture, Arunachal Pradesh and local administration keeping in view the potentiality of seed multiplication of potato crop.

LOCATION AND CLIMATE

The farm is situated at Changbu, Tawang with an elevation of 10.000 feet above the MSL . The average annual rainfall is 950 mm and recorded minimum temperature is -7°C during the peak winter season.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVE

Potato is one of the most important crops grown in the region. One of the limiting factors in increasing area under potato and increasing the yield per unit area, had been non – availability of quality seed. It was therefore, decided to establish this farm at Tawang to multiply breeder seed and Foundation seed so produced could be made available to the other parts of the region.

The aims and objectives are :-

            01. Introduction of new high yielding verities of potato suited to this region.

            02. To produce disease free Foundation seed potato for further multiplication in the farmers field for augmenting production potentialities.

            03. To conduct adaptability trials to evolve better management schedule for potato cultivation.

CONSTRAINTS IN ACHIEVING SEED PRODUCTION TARGET

             01. Due to prolific and continuous foggy weather condition prevailing in the farm area, the sun – shine hour requirement is not met hindering the photo – synthetic activity resulting poor tuber formation thereby reducing the yield.

             02. During the most of period of cropping season the relative humidity over 80% which is highly congenial for the growth and development of the pathogen, which is responsible for causing late blight of potato which has proved to be a limiting factor in potato cultivation word – wide.

             03. Incessant rain is anther – limiting factor – which comes in the way not allowing to take timely plant protection measures in the crucial stages of the growth of the crop.

             04. Non – availability of adequate animal dung (FYM) for use in the field as per schedule.

             05. Due to continuous cultivation, lack of crop rotation and failure to reclaim the soil exhausted of its nutrients and hence has rendered the soil into acidic in reaction.

STEPS TAKEN TO ENHANCE PRODUCTION OF SEED POTATO

The total area of the farm is 47 – 55 hectares. Cultivation area is 34.41 hectares. Cultivation would be taken up in 8 to 10 hectares of land on rotation basis. In the mean time the area left barren in the current cropping season would be amended phase wise making the, suitable for cultivation in the subsequent years.

Kufri-Giriraj has shown better performance as compared to Kufri – Jyoti. More of this variety would be brought under cultivation.
