How to Reach
Tawang is a very beautiful but remote hill station near the Indo-China border. Reaching Tawang takes some planning because there is no railway station or airport directly in Tawang. Guwahati the capital of Assam State may be rightfully termed as the gateway to Tawang for
the majority of the tourists planning to visit Tawang. It is approximately 480Km s. from Tawang and is well connected by Air with direct daily flights from New Delhi and Kolkata Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Jaipur etc. which are operated by all the Airlines of the country like Air India, Indigo, Jet Airlines, Spice jet, Go Air etc.
Here are the main routes:
1 By Air
Nearest Airport: Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (Guwahati, Assam) App. 480 km away
Itanagar Airport (Donyi Polo Airport, Hollongi) App. 440km
Other Option: Salonibari Airport (Tezpur, Assam) 330 km away, but flights are limited.
From Guwahati/Tezpur → travel by road (shared taxi, Sumo, or private vehicle).
2 By Train
Nearest Railway Station: Rangapara North (Assam) or Tezpur Railway Station.
You can also reach Guwahati Railway Station (major junction) and then proceed by road.
3 By Road
This is the most common way.
Guwahati → Tawang (approx. 14–16 hours, 480 km).
Route: Guwahati → Bhalukpong → Bomdila → Dirang → Tawang.
Roads are hilly and scenic but can be tough (especially in snow/rain).
4 By Helicopter

Permits Required
Since Tawang is in Arunachal Pradesh (protected area):
Indians need an ILP (Inner Line Permit) – available online at Arunachal ILP portal
Foreigners need a Protected Area Permit (PAP).

Fly to Guwahati
Hire a taxi/shared Sumo or book a tour package
Enjoy stopovers at Bomdila & Dirang before reaching Tawang
