Travel Advisory – Tawang District (09 Sept 2025)

Planning a trip to Tawang? This mountain paradise sits at 10,000 ft above sea level and requires crossing Sela Pass (13,750 ft) on the way to high‑altitude sites like Bumla Border (around 15,000 ft). Such elevations may not be suitable for everyone. Senior citizens and travellers with heart or medical conditions should consult a doctor and carry necessary medications before visiting.

To ensure a safe and enjoyable journey, please follow these guidelines issued by the District Tourism Officer:

  •  Stay off frozen lakes – the ice covering scenic lakes in Tawang may look sturdy, but it is dangerously thin; do not walk on frozen surfaces.
  •  Keep Tawang clean – single‑use plastics, cups and plates are banned. Use designated dustbins or carry your waste back to preserve the pristine landscape.
  • Respect local instructions – in case of emergencies, follow advice from local authorities, tour guides and rescue teams.
  •  Watch the weather – check forecasts and road conditions, and avoid travelling during heavy snowfall or severe weather.
  •  Travel precautions: equip vehicles with non‑skid chains for snow‑covered roads; pack warm clothes, emergency kits and communication devices; those prone to altitude sickness should avoid prolonged exposure to extreme cold and high altitudes (Sela Pass, Bumla Pass, Sho‑nga‑tser Lake, Chumi Gyatse etc.); hire experienced drivers when travelling on snow‑covered roads.
  •  Acclimatize – spend at least one day in Tawang before heading to high‑altitude spots; travellers with health issues should take extra precautions, including prior medical consultation and carrying lifesaving medicines.
  •  Emergency contacts: Deputy Commissioner – 076308 18147; Police Station – 076308 23200 / 923309 5355; District Hospital – 069097 00672; Department of Tourism (Tourist Information Officer) – 087947 88935.
  • Before you pack your bags, acclimatize, prepare properly and help us keep Tawang safe and beautiful. For more details, visit Arunachal Tourism (arunachaltourism.com) or Tawang Tourism (tawangtourism.in).

Safe travels and see you in Tawang.
